Hepatica Tulsi is a dietary supplement with a standardised extract from the leaves of tulsi – Asian basil (Ocimum sanctum, Ocimum tenuiflorum), a popular traditional plant in Ayurvedic medicine. One vegan capsule provides 200 mg of extract standardised to contain minimum 2% of ursolic acid and 1% of oleanolic acid.

Tulsi, otherwise known as holy basil and Asian basil (O. tenuiflorum), is a plant species native to India which belongs to the family Lamiaceae. The raw material is a herb – leaves, flowers and fruit. Due to its medicinal properties, tulsi has been used for ages in traditional Indian medicine and also in religious rituals. Many tulsi-based preparations are currently being manufactured in Europe.

Active substances found in the herb are primarily triterpenes – ursolic and oleanolic acid, essential oils (e.g. methyl eugenol, eugenol, bisabolol, linaool, 1,8-cineol), bioflavonoids (apigenin and lutein), rosmarinic acid.

Tulsi shows immunomodulatory properties. Studies have confirmed anti-inflammatory properties of Asian basil leaves. Regular supplementation resulted in an increase in levels of primary anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4, IFN-gamma), Th lymphocytes and NK (natural killer) cells. This action is attributed mainly to the presence of flavonoids. As polyphenols, flavonoids show also strong antioxidative properties which maximise an anti-inflammatory effect of tulsi. Reduced inflammation and increased levels of anti-inflammatory mediators contributes to its analgesic and antipruritic effect. There is also a decrease in sensitivity to pain.

Antibacterial and antifungal properties of tulsi are determined by the content of essential oils. Tulsi is rich in essential oils which contains a lot of phenols (methyl eugenol, eugenol, 1,8-cineol). They demonstrate strong antiseptic and antimicrobial properties. Phenols inhibit the growth of bacteria, among other things, Staphylococcus aureus, S. citreus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Asian basil is therefore helpful in the treatment of bacterial infections and mycoses in the digestive and respiratory system. It may inhibit the development of Candida in the colon and oral cavity. It eliminates also bad breath.

Tulsi exerts a protective effect on the liver and may reduce the accumulation of heavy metals (cadmium). It has been shown that Asian basil may be effective in preventing liver damage induced by toxin. It is the most likely due to its stabilising effect on cell membranes produced by active substances found in the plant. Flavonoids have the ability to reduce oxidative stress caused by a toxic effect of cadmium on the liver. Tulsi demonstrates a synergistic hepatoprotective effect with milk thistle.

Traditionally, tulsi is used successfully to treat respiratory inflammation, asthma, rhinosinusitis, allergy, angina, digestive problems, diabetes and skin diseases (pyodermas and pimples). In some countries, Asian basil is recommended as an agent for supporting the treatment of cancer and rheumatic diseases. It aids in cold, dry cough and hoarse voice. Owing to the content of essential oils, it increases the secretion of bile and gastric juice, supporting digestive processes and stimulating metabolism.

To sum up, Hepatica Tulsi is a product with unique properties and a wide range of medicinal uses. It is recommended especially for digestive and respiratory diseases, as a preventive measure, in the case of weakened immunity, to support the treatment of bacterial and fungal infections and also for individuals who lead a stressful lifestyle.
