Vitamin B12 is the general name for compounds called cobalamins, with a similar chemical structure. In the human body, one of the naturally occurring and biologically active forms of vitamin B₁₂ is methylcobalamin.

Functions of vitamin B₁₂ include participation in the production of red blood cells, support of immune system function as well as being a part of cell division processes, and homocysteine metabolism.
