Bladderwrack, or Fucus vesiculosus, is an alga found on the coasts of the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans, as well as in the Baltic Sea. Due to its high iodine content, its consumption is recommended mainly for people with thyroid dysfunctions, but its presence in the daily diet is not always advisable.
Everything you need
According to researchers, this inconspicuous-looking seaweed is an excellent source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, manganese, and above all iodine, so important for people with thyroid diseases. Although this last element may seem particularly valuable, we should be cautious. Why?
The iodine content of the algae that goes into the dietary supplement quality of the raw algae material, which, as we know, can vary greatly. It is important to remember that iodine, although necessary for the body, in excess can cause more harm than good. 100 mg of Bladderwrack contains about 180-200 mcg of iodine, which is enough to cover the recommended daily intake.
Sometimes iodine exacerbates the disease instead of helping it. Insomnia, high blood pressure, excessive sweating, increased heart rate, and shortness of breath attacks may occur. In such cases, consultation with a doctor is essential. Supplementation should also be stopped in case of encountering side effects.
