DOCTOR'S BEST MSM with OptiMSM is dietary supplement with a source of organic sulphur, i.e. MSM (methylsulphonylmethane) in the amount of 1.5 gram in one capsule.

Methylsulphonylmethane (dimethyl sulphone, more commonly known as MSM) – an organic sulphur compound obtained from lignin; the oxidised form of dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) used in supplementation because of its specific antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It contributes to the maintenance of healthy joints (its effect is slightly different from glucosamine sulphate). It occurs naturally in some green vegetables and other food products but those amounts are insufficient for obtaining a therapeutic effect.

After oral administration, MSM is detectable in blood serum and seems to have a very long half-life - it can be detected in serum up to two days after the administration of the right dose. Moreover, it has the capability of bioaccumulation in all tested tissues.

MSM and sulphur deficiencies
MSM supplements systemic sulphur deficiencies, including thiol -SH groups, necessary for glutathione and antioxidant enzymes, and it can also contribute to an increase in collagen synthesis. It shows the synergic activity in this area when combined with cysteine, methionine, N-acetylcysteine (NAC), glucosamine sulphate and other sulphur or sulphur group donors.

MSM and practical applications
A decrease in exercise induced oxidation is noted with MSM supplementation and thought to be the underlying reason for reductions in muscle damage and soreness. MSM reduces the parameters of oxidative biomarkers and lipid peroxidation caused by physical effort, alleviates the symptoms of arthrosis, reduces muscle soreness after training and reduces allergic reactions to pollen. It is also efficient as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent.

MSM and joint health
Sulphur is an important component of human joint cartilage. Administering it to people who have a diet poor in sulphur helps to protect the cartilage, which is necessary for keeping the joints in good health. Possibly, that is the reason why glucosamine seems to be more efficient in the form of a sulphate than in its other form (hydrochloride).

Although sulphur (in the form of a sulphate) is used as a stimulator of the production of proteoglycans which help to retain water in the matrix of cartilage tissue (synovial fluid), the situation mentioned before can only occur when sulphur deficiencies are supplemented.

MSM and allergies
A scientific experiment was conducted on a group of 55 people with hay fever. In an open-label trial they were administered MSM for a month in the daily dosage of 2,600mg. The observed results were the alleviation of allergy symptoms and breathing problems in the first 7 days, as well as further reduction of those problems in the following days.

Tests showed the reduction of those symptoms by about 20-40%.

MSM and physical effort and injuries
Administered for 30 days to moderately active men in the dosage of 3,000mg per day, MSM is able to reduce DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) by 1.5 point in the 5-point Likert scale. The results were measured 48 hours after training. The dosage of 1,500mg turned out less effective (0.5 point). The above-described situation can be connected with the antioxidant properties of MSM which lead to the reduction of muscle damage, lipid peroxidation and protein carbonylation.

MSM and connective tissue degeneration
In a systematic review, two studies were presented that determined the relationship between MSM and osteomyelitis and arthritis, including the trial that consisted in consuming 1,500mg of MSM every day for 12 weeks (by itself or together with 1,500mg of glucosamine). A reduction in pain intensity was observed in all groups subjected to treatment as compared with the group who took placebo.

Another trial with a larger dose of MSM (2g a day for 2 weeks, then 6g for the next 10 weeks) confirmed MSM's influence on the reduction of pain in joints, and after a 12-week supplementation with 3.375g of MSM in people with arthritis of the knee, the reduction of 20% of the symptoms and a 21% lower pain intensity was observed, while in people who were administered placebo it rose by 9%.

Recommended use of MSM
MSM supplementation dosage should be 3,000mg per day. The dosage seems to be efficient in eliminating arthritis symptoms and provides the organism with antioxidant protection. It is not entirely confirmed whether a dosage larger than 3,000mg would be better. Because of that, it is recommended not to exceed it.
