Icariin -- "the natural Viagra®"
The main active ingredient of the epimedium is icariin (ICA) –a flavanol glycoside. The mechanism of action of icariin is similar to the effects of drugs used in erectile dysfunctions, such as sildenafil and tadalafil. The mechanism consists in the selective inhibition of type 5 phosphodiesterase enzyme (PDE-5). This enzyme is responsible for the transformation of cGMP into GMP. cGMP, as an element of cell signal transduction, is necessary to achieve an erection – it enables relaxation of smooth muscles and inflow of blood into the corpus cavernosum. Thus, blocking the PDE-5 enzyme protects cGMP against inactivation, leading to a long-lasting erection following sexual arousal.

In addition, icariin, by its effect on the nitric oxide synthase, promotes an increase in the level of nitric oxide (NO) which shows a vasodilatory effect. In a healthy person, the optimal amount of NO is produced by the arterial endothelium. However, in case of numerous disorders (including testosterone deficiency, atherosclerotic processes, mental tension), NO synthesis is insufficient. NO, by activating guanylate cyclase, increases the level of the aforementioned cGMP. This property additionally supports the PDE-5 inhibitory activity, which intensifies the pro-erectile effect of icariin.
