Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenolic compound, a derivative of catechin, abundantly found in green tea leaves. EGCG is known for its antioxidant properties. L-DOPA, or levodopa, is a natural amino acid that is a derivative of tyrosine. In the body, L-DOPA acts as a precursor to the synthesis of dopamine. Levodopa is registered as a drug indicated for the treatment of Parkinson's disease and restless legs syndrome. L-DOPA is also combined with drugs that are inhibitors of an extracerebral aromatic amino acid decarboxylase to increase the bioavailability of levodopa in the brain.
