Jarrow Formulas MK-7 is a dietary supplement containing a bioactive and fantastically assimilable form of vitamin K, that is K2 MK-7, obtained from GMO-free fermented natto soy.
The preparation supplements vitamin K deficiencies. Because of its multifunctional health-promoting properties, it can be used for preventing many diseases – osteoporosis, atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular system diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, neoplastic diseases. Supplementation is particularly recommended for people who have problems with their bones and complain of their brittleness and fragility and a bad condition of teeth.
Vitamin K is a name used when referring to a number of various chemical substances. It contains vitamin K (phylloquinone) synthesised in plants and a few forms of vitamin K2 (the so-called menaquinones), found mainly in natto (a product of soy fermentation) and products of animal origin. In that group, the form that definitely stands out is K2 MK-7, which is absorbed best and stays bioavailable for the longest. Because of that, its effects are the fastest and the most efficient.
MK-7 for the skeletal system
It is common knowledge that a good condition of the skeletal system is determined by the right supply of calcium. That, however, is not enough – for calcium to reach bones and bind with other minerals, the presence of vitamin K2 is necessary. Vitamin K2 performs the role of an activator for osteocalcin, the main enzyme released by osteoblasts. Thanks to osteocalcin, calcium is stored in bones and does not form deposits in arteries or soft tissues.
Research has proven that vitamin K2 supplementation stimulates the processes of mineralisation, has a beneficial effect on collagen structure, and increases bone mass. Thanks to that, the mechanical resistance of bones increases – they become hard but also properly flexible, resistant to fractures and cracks.
MK-7 for the cardiovascular system
Numerous scientific tests have proven that increasing vitamin K2 supply reduces the risk of atherosclerosis and other cardiovascular system diseases. It has been proven that in the aetiology of such diseases, the factor that has the greatest impact is the age-related deterioration of blood vessels. Calcium and phosphorus salts that are deposited on artery walls make blood vessels harden and lose their elasticity. Preventing those phenomena is possible thanks to the activation of the matrix gla protein (MGP), which prevents the deposition of calcium in blood vessels. Its activity depends on the presence of vitamin K and is strictly controlled by it.
MK-7 for glucose and insulin management
Relatively high amounts of vitamin K are stored in the pancreas, where insulin in produced, which controls blood glucose levels. Japanese scientists have demonstrated that vitamin K deficiencies have a negative effect on the release of insulin and regulation of sugar levels in the blood serum. Tests have shown that too low a vitamin K2 supply gives the same symptoms as those that can be observed in people who suffer from type 2 diabetes.
MK-7 in fighting cancer
In the light of recent scientific reports, vitamin K has a rather large anticancer potential. The form that has more anticancer properties is K2, which affects the replication, transformation, and survival of cancer cells. In vitro tests have demonstrated that vitamin K2 inhibits the growth and induces the apoptosis of the human cell lines of pancreatic, ovarian, breast, and liver cancer.
MK-7 in preventing Alzheimer’s disease
There are reports suggesting that the right supply of vitamin K can prevent the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Scientists have proven that the main factor that determines the genetic risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease is apolipoprotein E gene polymorphism. People with the genotype ApoE e4/e4 and e4/e3 are statistically more susceptible to the development of atherosclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. Interestingly, in all subjects with those genotypes, large vitamin K deficiencies were observed. In many cases, increasing the supply of vitamin K prevented the development of Alzheimer’s disease despite the genetic predisposition to it.
MK-7 in fighting aging consequences
As the organism ages, there might occur some disorders in regulating the level of various biofactors, which can lead to many chronic diseases. One of the substances whose level changes with age is interleukin 6 (IL-6). In an aging organism, its levels increase at the expense of other cytokines. The imbalance induces chronic inflammations and increases the risk of degeneration within joints. Scientists have also demonstrated a correlation between too high IL-6 levels and dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Vitamin K2 is one of the substances that inhibit the overproduction of interleukin 6 and reduce inflammations. The exact mechanism of that activity is not yet known but numerous tests have demonstrated that increasing vitamin K2 levels results in the reduction of IL-6 concentration and the restoration of balance in key cytokine levels.
To sum up, MK-7 is a perfect dose of a vitamin with a very wide range of health-promoting properties. It efficiently supplements deficiencies, minimises the risk of many dangerous diseases, improves the condition of bones, and has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the cardiovascular system.
