Icariin is the main active component of horny goat weed (Epimedium), which was popular in Far East cultures because of its abilities to increase potency and influence on sexual experience.
Mechanism of action of this substance practically resembles action of very effective potency medicine, sildenafil (Viagra). It consists in selective inhibition of phosphodiesterases type 5, so that it increases concentration of cGMP in penis cells. Icariin affinity for PDE-5 is about 100 times greater than for other isoforms of this enzyme. Another advantage is an increase in expression of NOS enzyme, which raises concentration of nitric oxide. This compound in turn dilatates vascular smooth muscles and increases blood flow i.a. to genital organs. According to studies in animal models, it is indicated that icariin can be potentially used to increase testosterone level in men with deficiencies.
