Maize (Zea maydis), a plant of American origin, growing in Poland. The raw food material is grain maize (Semes Zeae Maydis) processed into flour, semolina, oil. Medicinal raw material is corn silk (Stigma maydis) with a pistil, which is a rich source of reducing sugars, phytosterols, saponins catechine, soluble silica. Maize grain is a source of nutrient and functional components: protein (approx. 12%), fat (approx. 5), carbohydrates (approx. 65%), vitamins (vitamins B, C, D, E and K), and minerals (phosphorus, magnesium, copper, nickel, potassium, iron). Food products made from corn are used in diets for people not absorbing certain varieties of proteins. Corn silk (Stigma maydis) are diuretic, anti-inflammatory (especially inflammation of the gallbladder, liver, kidney rhinitis), lowering blood pressure and increasing its clotting, improve metabolism. The use of dietary maize products prevents accumulation of fat.
