Pineapple plants (Ananas sativus) is a plant of the hot climate zone (also grown in greenhouse conditions in Europe). Its raw medicinal and food material is a pineapple fruit (Fructus pineapple Sativa) used because of the sugar content (approx. 15%), compounds containing nitrogen, citric acid, vitamin C and minerals (potassium and copper compound)s. Moreover, it contains a mixture of enzymes similar to pepsin and papain (bromelin). Bromelain, mainly in sports supplementation, increases the digestibility of proteins, especially in the case of high-protein diets and is anti-inflammatory and anti-swell. This prevents excessive burden on the digestive system and diarrhoea. Fresh fruits are suitable for direct consumption as a dietary supplement. Powdered pineapple fruit is used in the treatment of diseases of: the digestive tract (stomach and intestine), liver and kidney and cardiovascular system.
