Yellow Gentian (Gentiana lutea) is a perennial plant from the gentian family whose therapeutic benefits have been known since the 2nd century BC. Yellow Gentian grows wild in mountainous regions of the Central and South Europe and Asia Minor.

Secoiridoids (mainly amarogentin, amaropanin and amaroswerin), bitter substances found in the plant, stimulate taste buds and thus promote the secretion of digestive juices: saliva, gastric and pancreatic juice and bile. An extract from yellow gentian is also characterised by anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity (has an inhibitory effect on Fusarium oxysporum,  Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus niger and Penicillium digitatum). It has immunomodulatory properties and helps strengthen the body in general.

Preparations based on yellow gentian root are used, among others, for a decrease in the production of gastric juice, dysfunction of salivary glands, eating disorders, indigestion, constipation, bloating and liver and gallbladder dysfunction.  Apart from its beneficial impact on the digestive system, gentian extract may also, among others, improve wound healing, stimulate metabolism and nervous system function.
